Solder wire for solar panels is a thinner wire than traditional store bought solder. Lead free is recommended unless you have a well ventilated work space. This wire is 95% + tin and store bought costs about about $25-$40 a pound. On the internet you can purchase for as low as $18 a pound for lead free. Solar panels require very little for pesky joints that do not want to hold. Even the finer spools are too thick and require longer iron exposure as the wire transfers the heat up the wire. You often end up with a drop that is 10 times too much.

These simple foils provide enough solder for an entire 36 cell panel from a single drop or two from larger diameter solder. Do not use your car:-) Use a deep cooking pan, they work better.

  • Dan, you can buy rosin core solder that's thinner than a hair, why don't you just use that?

  • are you adding flux to your "sold-er" joints, as your process is burning up the flux that should be in the "sold-er" that you are using. Is what you are buying at Lowe's even electronic "sold-er", and not for plumbing? They are not the same thing at all.

The way it is SUPPOSED to work is you heat up your work piece to where it's hot enough to melt the "sold-er", and THEN apply the "sold-er". Proper "sold-ering" is NOT AT ALL the same as some adhesive or putty.

  • I'd just go with regular small diameter solder.

And certainly NOT lead-free! That stuff sucks.

  • metal Jizz !!

  • Remember when you solder the junction should be shiney and not dull. If it is dull looking it is considered a cold solder junction (poor connection point). Also a solder flux should be used.

  • @stormcrow2525 because the thick solder produces a bigger 'droplet' when you heat it up. the thin flat foil approach works better for applyin to the back of the panels

  • @pjharro amazing how you think I'm being serious. lol. I'm just messing around. Every time he has a video that he says the word solder people say that. It can be said two ways. I love this channel. These two rock!

  • I say sol-der but understand you guys saying sodder... Don't get me started on aluminium...?

  • omg ITS THE T-1000

  • Get small diameter silver solder for lowest temperature, fastest in/out soldering.

Sorry if people want to bitch at anyone who wants things said and spelled correctly but the "L" in solder is silent.

I know the slobs if the world don't want any rules about anything, but that's cause they are stupid and incapable of learning anything beyond a sitcom..
