I've spent hours listening to this song over and over, in my car, hidden in the dark corner of a parking lot-anywhere safe, unlike many of the other comments-Melissa speaks to the horror within my own family-I prayed in the darkness for my uncle to stop-but wings set me free-I am still bound to my Silent Legacy

I saw Melissa Etheridge live in 1995. Saw her do this song. Single greatest live performance I have ever witnessed. I have never seen a musician on stage with such command of an audience. Utterly electrifying.

This is about my favorite song of hers because she seems even more passionate about it than most of the others. When she says "Oh my child...." it just brings tears to my eyes, as though she is uttering that cry for all the gay/lesbian, etc kids that are going through all these feelings and terrible times with hateful people in their lives. My heart goes out to all the kids out there who have gone through things like that. It shouldn't happen! I wish I could help them all.

"The legacy stops here!" I'm recommending that slogan as the theme for the GSA during our anti-bullying week next year.

This song makes me think about the Spirit Day Six. We need to make the world a safer place for our youth. The hate must stop here. To quote Melissa, "The legacy stops here." Listen carefully the the words...

I listen to this song a lot (as I do with most of Melissa Etheridge's work. Since the recent suicides of those 6 boys (the Spirit Day Six), this song has taken on a whole new relevance. Listen carefully to the lyrics. We need to make the world a safer place for young people to be on the outside, who they are on the inside. The hate has to stop here. To quote Melissa, "The legacy stops here." Let's create a new legacy...

When I first heard this song, I cried. I can relate to the song, even to this day.
