The Mayfair Set is a series of programmes produced by Adam Curtis for the BBC, first broadcast in the summer of 1999.

The programme looked at how buccaneer capitalists of hot money were allowed to shape the climate of the Thatcher years, focusing on the rise of Colonel David Stirling, Jim Slater, James Goldsmith, and Tiny Rowland, all members of The Clermont club in the 1960s. It received the BAFTA Award for Best Factual Series or Strand in 2000.

The second episode tells of rise of Jim Slater who became famous for writing an investment column in The Sunday Telegraph under the nom de plume of The Capitalist.

Oh, I'd say he slays plenty of sacred cows on the left throughout. IMO, this series is insightful precisely because it 'fleshes out' market forces from an abstract to the people and power relations that take place. Wouldn't you say that is a form of analysis rather than a political position?

  • This whole series is a potted history of fruity accents.

  • @mindcorp Well said. Dicks like it hard don't they?

  • Thankyou for the upload. There's a bit of reverb on the audio for some reason ? Brilliant programme anyway

I'd say in a lot of cases I'd say the analysis was pretty objective. What possible conclusion can one draw from this episode, apart from markets are dangerous and must be controlled?

Well, as the recent economic crash demonstrated, we never learn from our mistakes, and we keep on cutting regulation and giving power to megalomaniacal idiots obsessed with profit.

  • insightful series about Britian in the 1950's and 1960's. The drawback is the blatant leftist slant of the report.
