An original story written by Bennett Schneider, during the Station Fire in the Angeles National Forest above Los Angeles in September of 2009.

The story includes the Greek pantheon of Gods who play in Southern California as readily as they have in Greece. In fact the climates of the two locations are similar in many ways. And, in fact, the two places were ablaze at about the same time in 2009.

The photographs and video at the end of the story are of the Station Fire during it's second or third day, after it had gone overnight from 5,000 acres to 20,000 acres. It would end up burning over 160,000 acres. They were taken by me from Hancock Park and Mid Wilshire in Los Angeles.

Please leave a video or text of how you interpret the story, what meaning it may hold for you, or your own response, whatever it may be.

  • I don't understand, what the name ("Hymena" or "Chimena"?) of the "wild woman of the sea" refers to. The geographical meaning of Gabriel and Catalina is obvious, but what about Chimena? Coud anyone with a deeper knowledge of the local circumstances plesae enlighten me? Thanks in advance!

  • @videodin for the answer to that, look up the weather reports for Southern California , or more specifically, Baja California, Mexico, around Late September or early October of 2009. You are looking for a large weather event.

  • We humans become as Gabriel, building ourselves up high and mighty - forgetting to love the land we call earth, we overcrowd it, we destroy it and it takes an act of mother nature to bring us back down to earth and realize how important it is to care for it first and realize we should not overpower our planet with more than earth can stand. It will take a mighty destruction to make us humble - Worse than 9/11, Katrina, CA earthquakes - but we can recover.

  • I can't believe they saw fit to ram a millions dollar machine into the moon just to knock it silly and kick up dust! Who did that save??

  • We here in Australia have recently experienced tragic bushfires leaving hundreds homeless and mass devastation. A very fitting story sister wonderfully told :)

  • I've just seen pictures of the Sydney dust storm too. Quite incredible! May nature support your lives in peace and may all support nature with harmony.

  • Well done!

  • Oh well done!

  • @SisterUnity

Ah, the hurricane "Jimena"! Thank you very much

  • Oooo...it's like a whole new Greco-Roman myth. Awesome! I like this. And I like how Apollo is the last god mentioned shining down upon Gabriel. Apollo is my fave. I get the sense this story is a reminder to watch our ego, that it doesn't get out of control and we lose our sense of unity with all things, but instead the ego if left unchecked, can become the cause of suffering.

  • The recent paper had the editorial cartoon of two Moon people with one saying to the other - So they have sent a missile - can troops be far behind?

Life is rather dubious - seems the insane are running projects and spending money

  • This was a beautiful story and inspiring the passion that you read it with made me shudder - Nov Sr Angela Merici
