Townshend has said that smashing a guitar every night taught him how to actually shatter it into splinters rather than just breaking the neck off it. There are certain ways to hit it on the ground. He also said he learned that if the guitar was a Strat, a specific number of whacks was needed so that he knew which was going to be the final one. He counted the number of whacks to the ground and made the final blow as dramatic as he could. He had it down to a science.

@JosephCote27 No actually they tried to recreate original feel as they d oon every mark portnoy tribute program . On led zeppelin Paul intentionally played sloppy to get more like page feel . same goes here .
