Front impact
Although the drivers footwell did not rupture, there was extensive deformation and the clutch pedal moved rearward by 175mm, leading to a weak rating for protection of the driver's lower leg, feet and ankles. Structures in the dashboard presented a risk of injury to the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger.
Side impact
The Carens scored maximum points based on the dummy responses in the side impact and pole tests. However, the driver's door became unlatched in the side impact and the car was penalised for this.
Child-protection
The passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward-facing child restraint to be used in that seating position. However, inadequate information is provided to the driver about the status of the airbag. The label warning against using a rearward-facing child restraint in the passenger's seat was in English only and was on only one side of the sun visor, so it would not be visible at all times. The presence of ISOFIX anchorages in the rear outboard seats was not clearly marked.
Pedestrian protection
The leading edge of the bonnet scored no points for the protection offered to pedestrians' legs, as did the bonnet for the protection offered to adults' heads. However, the bumper performed better, scoring maximum points.
