  • I'm going to cgcc next year, and I'm very interested in learning to play drums (both a set/drumline type) Are you the teacher for this? What class should I enroll in to learn? I need to learn to read music and learn the techniques to help me turn my good rhythm into good playing. :)

  • @deathofall1052 Yes I am the percussion teacher at CGCC. There are several options for studying percussion dependent on your level of experience. Lessons are available for majors and non-majors which would be the most individualized instruction. There are also several ensembles which include percussion: Percussion Ensemble (MUP190 - requires percussion experience); Latin Percussion Ensemble (open to any students), Community Band, etc.

  • @GottryPercussion

If I wanted to learn how to play the snare drum better, because I want to learn the techniques to play faster and better, what would be the best course in your opinion? I can already play on a set fairly well and I'm teaching myself how to play with the classic grip so I can play the solo drum better. I'm not terribly well experienced, but I don't think I'd consider myself a complete beginner either. I'm not planning on majoring in music I'm very interested in learning.

  • @deathofall1052 Best thing might be to e-mail me at CGC and we can discuss some of your options. You can find my e-mail address by searching the faculty listing on the cgcc website.

  • can you post the all-state etudes?

  • Didn't get a chance to do those this year. I'm hoping to do the regional etudes again next year and possibly include the all-state etudes next time as well.

  • Hear, hear. Thank you, I have students auditioning, and while I've become a decent percussionist through practice, we still live an hour from the closest nuanced, professional private instructor. Thanks for posting.

  • I may, but wasn't originally planning to. I made the regional audition etudes a priority because of the high number of students that audition that do not have access to regular percussion lessons.

  • will you also be uploading the all-state etudes?

  • These etudes wouldn't be appropriate for a college entrance audition. Best thing would be to talk to the percussion instructor at the college or a local music teacher with a percussion degree to choose appropriate lit for an audition.
