The song Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah as styled in this video is affectionately called within the African-American Church an Old Dr. Watts hymn. Old Dr. Watts hymns are sung in a slow, ornamental style, with each line being lined out by a leader before it is sung by the congregation.

Old Dr. Watts refers to Isaac Watts, an early 19th century English composer. Although these type hymns are fading from use in modern church services, Old Dr. Watts hymns enjoy a special place in the heart of the African-American church. Mourners Bench Records through its upcoming release Take Me Back to the Old Landmark hopes to preserve this part of the African-American heritage for future generations.

  • ummm i always thought that Jehova was the God of the JEHOVAh WITNESS?! but they ^ have a cross and jehovah witness dnt belive that!?

  • @GOODPUPPY123

The use of the Jehovah when referring to God is not exclusive to the Jehovah's Witnesses. Actually predates the founding of the Jehovah's Witnesses. If interested in the history, Wikipedia provides an in depth history of the phrase.

  • Did not mean to imply that Dr. Watts wrote "Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah." A number of African-Americans affectionately label all call and response hymns as "Old Dr. Watts."

  • @GOODPUPPY123 The name of Jehovah is mentioned over 6,000 times in the "original' Biblical texts. God's name was Removed when the St James version of the Bible was produced and many different Christian sects adopted the St James version or translation of the Bible. So-called biblical translators removed it because they couldn't agree on the pronunciation of the Hebrew name. Jehovah is not just the God of Jehovah's Witnesses. He is the Father of Jesus Christ & who Jesus always prayed to.

  • @Hiw333

So anybody who believe in the Lord is a Jehovah witness lol

It's true. Even in the NWT... when you cross-reference the verse JW's get their name from in Isaiah 43:10 it points back to statements by Jesus saying "You are MY witnesses".

  • I love to hear the old acapella devotional slave songs. They always touch my soul. You are never too old give your life to Jesus.

  • That's Gospel

  • yes sirrrrrrr....

  • @xiancanplay JEHOVAH is not "another" name for God, it is THE name of God. As mentioned before, the name YHWH appears over 6,000 times in the Bible.

  • Goodpuppy123, many christians don't really read their Bible's, I do. As far as us calling God Jehovah, you need to read Exodus, ch 6 and verses 1-3. Verse 3, ad I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them. Goodpuppy123 no one told me to read that. Oddly enough, i was just reading my bible one day and stumbled across it. Yep I wrote that bad boy down quick lol.

  • @GOODPUPPY123 lol.... they are baptist ... and Jehovah is another name for God to us as well
