Alan didn't write this, it was a Screamin' Jay Hawkins number. Nina Simone did what many consider the definitive version, but this is amazing. House of the Rising Sun is a song from the US south dating from about 100 years ago. Alan Price arranged it for the Animals in 1964.

Much better than the Animals' version (then again, it comes from my least favorite pre-1967 Animals' album).

I just got done doing a 4 hour "British invasion" show on the radio station I work for... I simply had to come home and listen to some of these tunes again.

What album is this on? It's awesome!

Such an amazing interpretation of a Screamin' Jay Hawkins Classic. Definitely one of the most impressive covers.

The genius behind the keyboards with the early British rockers The Animals,He put his spin on Screamin Jay Hawkins just like he did on House of the Rising Sun for Eric Burdon and The Animals

Ha! Just twigged it! A little joke by Alan. The opening notes of the organ solo at 1:55 are just the same as his solo on "House of the Rising Sun" (although in a different key). See 1:45 in this video:

Cheeky bastard, after stealing all the royalties from House to buy the organ he used on Spell. I wouldn't give him the time of day. Still good though.

Gordon Bennett...wonderful. !!!

This IMHO IS the consummate rendition of this song.
