I've been a rangers' fan since 82 and watched Messier his entire career. He had a mean streak like you wouldn't believe. I don't quite understand why he did this (not like he needed a reason if he was in one of his ornery moods) but he made no attempt to avoid him and seemed to hit him on purpose. Messier was a classy guy much of the time but he did some things on the ice that bordered on criminal. I'm also surprised nobody went after him. I remember this well.
