This video is in response to this post http://mytechnologyworld9.blogspot.com/2010/08/complicated-mechanisms-explain...
which has a simple animation of how a sewing machine works - and it happens to be right. Here's a firsthand demonstration using real sewing machine parts to show you exactly why it's correct, and how.

For a fantastic, even MORE detailed explanation (if you just can't get enough) head over to Secret Life of Machines - The Sewing Machine (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Jbk1uU_Jkk). Those videos are amazing, and show the evolution of a sewing machine from the first idea to the current incarnations.

  • A bit simplistic... there are many home models with vertically mounted hooks..(My old Bernina 830 as well as my vintage Singer 15-91. and there are industrial machines with horizontally mounted (rotary) hooks. To say that it is "industrial" just because of the style of hook and bobbin is really not true! It is industrial because it has a more powerful mechanism to provide faster sewing, and to match, typically a higher amp motor!!

  • @KarenQuiltsTexas Hi Karen, you are correct. However, I've worked with mostly current industrial single needles, and have yet to use one with a horizontal bobbin case. Yes, there are home machines with a vertical bobbin case. However, this is a quite simplistic vid whose purpose was merely to clarify a confusing idea illustrated in a .gif from another site. (continued in next comment)

  • (continued from previous comment) It is not meant to be a fully comprehensive explanation. I appreciate your comment which provides clarification to people who may be have been confused by my definition of what differentiates an industrial machine from a home machine. Thanks for watching!

  • Thanks LLuE88 for the explanation with technical terms. :) And thank you for the compliments everyone! I'm flattered!
