@allangee1873 freedom fighters, yes. i personally don't support any violence. i was merely pointing out the fact that the republican struggle was seen as legitimate by many. im not sure about loyalists defending their country - the "country" was not about to be invaded. also its a moot point whether northern ireland belongs to descendants of plantations who uprooted the native population. of course thats history and what counts is what the majority of the people want in n ireland

It's quite telling that, apart from the British army, these loyalist groups had no support anywhere in the world. The IRA, on the other hand, were seen by many as legitimate freedom fighters, receiving both funding and arms from a plethora of countries and communities. The IRA at least had an ideological goal, as opposed to the sheer bigotry and mainly civilian targets of the loyalists. (I don't support the IRA by the way and I have English family). Anyway, it's all in the past now - thank God
