  • To have hired a sound recordist and video expert would have been so worthwhile.

  • the canard of the "religious right" needs to evolve to the "religious".

I lived in NY where a great many religious people who were liberals, were just as bigoted as the conservatives.

this isn't a political issue its a sanity issue

  • also stunning ignorance of the evolutionary process of the human brain. whatever our race looked like, whatever our planet looked like, THAT would automatically emerge as the standard of beauty. If our species needed to breathe clouds of sulfur, then a giant bubbling sulfur swamp, that would in your current state make you nausious, would then have automatically emerged as a standard of wonder, beauty, and awe.

  • wow, stunning ignorance. I can see saying something like this 20 years ago, before sufficient studies of esthetics (beauty) have been done, and before it was all reduced to and explained by math (the golden ratio + symmetry). But to say it in 2010 demonstrates the lack of even the most basic contemporary understanding of beauty. There have been everything from published papers on this, to a Discovery Channel special.

  • first of all that's called a "sound tech", and secondly hiring a crue to film a lecture is overkill. all that's required a tripod, and an audio line from the PA system to the camcorder.

Personally I had no trouble hearing any of it, and I have minor hearing damage.

  • Good point, but just as a point of accuracy (I don't think you'd disagree) - "political" is more than just "left vs right". Policy (or politics) is the method via which society should attempt to deal with the psychological problems (as you said "sanity issue") of certain groups, especially when those groups organize to attain political power.

  • silvercade, for a six year old your spelling is great! Now, when you grow up you will realise that what you think is beautiful is beautiful because you evolved to live amongst it. The world is not perfect for us by accident. WE ARE PERFECT FOR THE WORLD, because we spent billions of years evolving to adapt. Read up on evolution when you get to fifth or sixth grade maybe and you might understand. Good luck!

  • But our planet is crude and harsh. A world in which 98% of all the species that have ever emerged are now extinct. A world that is constantly at the mercy of natural disasters.

Sure there is definitely a lot of beauty in nature, but there are also a lot of disturbing things too. Observe a pack of cheetahs taking down a zebra and eating it while it's alive and twitching, or even a Venus fly trap capturing a living insect and digesting it alive.

  • And what exactly is beauty, again? Does beauty exist outside of the human mind? Whether 'beauty' is necessary or not is irrelevant, anyway. It is what it is. What exists, exists. Things are as they are. There's nothing more to say.
