nothing unfinished about this. The rough sound adds to its greatness. We undersand it in the context of his death, it makes it haunting and the rough sound adds to that. makes me think of some great city thats now a ghost town.

@kaiserkeller61 It is true. This song and "Grow Old With Me".
-
John didn't learn alot of his piano skills until after The Beatles I believe.
-
Continuation: These two realization lead me to wonder: Why were John's instrumental tapes so reduced in his recordings? For example, his acoustic guitar on Jealous Guy is mostly inaudible. He could have played the piano part that Phil Spector plays in that song. I know John was a guitarist primarily, but he could have contributed so much more the instrumental tracks of the Beatles and his own solo career!

I used to think that John had no real skill at the piano and that Paul was the real pianist of the Beatles. These tapes shown me how skilled John really was at the piano. They have also shown me how much John brought into his songwriting. I used to think that John would write a song on his acoustic guitar, bring it into a producer, and then the producer would add the arrangement. But on these piano tapes, I can see that John really knew what he wanted before he entered the studio. Continued...

@ZZqezza "for paul" was written on the tape
-
@kaiserkeller61 really? that would make the song even better
-
@ZZqezza apparently it was written for Paul McCartney - i read on wikipedia that John wrote 'for Paul' on the cassette tape. might not be true but i like to think he did write it for his friend

Everytime I listen to this song I try to think how the Beatles felt like when they first listened to this. It must have been some very hard and emotional days for them to work on these tapes and make them into a song..
