Computer threat trend forecast for 2010, reports PandaLabs
PandaLabs has released its forecast of computer threat trends for the coming year. Besides increasing production of complex malware samples, the use of smart social engineering for distribution and new targets like Mac and windows7 the report focuses on the likely danger of a real cyber war. Although this term is more associated with science fiction than the real-world, it's a phrase we are about to start hearing more often. During the last year, governments around the world including the United States, the UK and Spain, have expressed concern about the potential for cyber-attacks to affect economies or critical infrastructure. We also saw this year how several Web pages in the United States and South Korea were the subject of attacks. PandaLabs expect to see similar politically-motivated attacks in 2010.

Are you really the only person running your computer?
Luis Corrons, director of PandaLabs, warns computer users in a detailed article on botnets on the growing danger of remote-controlled PCs. According to statistics, at least 100 million computers have been infected by bots and more than 150,000 systems are infected daily and become part of a botnet. When infected computers are analyzed, it is common to detect multi-infection patterns meaning that a single computer can belong to more than one botnet. Although the average of remaining is around ten months, it can be as long as two years. Additionally, up to 80% of computers in botnets have been infected for over a month. This period can vary enormously depending on the country, the users IT knowledge, and whether an antivirus is installed and updated frequently.
Not just home users should be worried about bots and infections caused by this type of malware, as according to research, up to 25% of compromised systems belong to corporate domains. Loss of control in enterprise networks today not only mean severe financial loss and brand damage, but also legal consequences.
