In 1900, Fergus Falls was home to over 50 African Americans. The first among them was Prince Albert Honeycutt, a Civil War vet with a successful barbershop business. In 1897, 18 black families joined him, lured to town by a real estate flyer, but the farmland they expected was scarce. Prince helped them find jobs. Still, their time in Fergus was short-lived. With WWI and the Depression, work dried up, and most left the area.

  • They are hundreds of African-Americans in Fergus Falls. The block over from my house has several apartment complexes that are predominantly black. I do not know where everyone else gets their info, but I live in FF and see my neighbors every day.

  • We lived in FF in the 50-60's and knew the Tates, who I believe was the last family of Af-Amer left in town. This is fascinating and very enlightening piece - thanks for posting!

  • Went on vacation this June to Fergus Falls and only saw one black person at the gas station in a weeks stay there. I thought that was odd seeing how I'm from the southern suburbs of Chicago. It was really beautiful there though. I was impressed.
