Perhaps not the "healthiest" tune ever recorded, but the Corsairs featuring the voice of Jay "Bird" Uzzell went to #12 with this in January of 1962. The Corsairs were formed in La Grange, North Carolina, and "Smoky Places" promptly went high on everyone's list of favorite Carolina Beach Music tunes.

  • Why the pix of The Flamingos

  • @DooWopRonnieM This was an inadvertent error, but I'm revising the video soon anyway. Thanks.

  • I want to be in a blood red drop-top split-grille GTO with over-under headlights; with an ice cold PBR and a Winston; the bride beside me in her white jeans and pink turtleneck sweater, smiling and laughing with an open road before me and a full moon overhead.

I'd drive all night long and play this song over and over and over and over

  • LOL, thanks for your great comment!

  • In 2011, our lovers would probably be meeting in a "smoke free" Starbucks...something would have been lost in the translation. :-----(

  • Today it would be meeting in Cyber Places re-written by Wm.T. Lach

  • @DooWopRonnieM That's not the Flamingos, That's Shep and The Limelights.

  • Great singing... great song. As good as these guy are, how did they not enjoy any real success after this near Top Ten hit? I guess being on a small label (Tuff) didn't help. This is as good as anything the Drifters did.

  • Wonderful voices, and real good song.

  • Great

  • DANCING WHERE NO ONE KNOWS OUR FACES!! "SMOKEY PLACES"

    PERFECT SONG! GREAT CHA CHA!!!

  • There's a very, old building in my neighborhood. It's a now a bar and keno place, but there's a sign on an unused entrance that reads "DINNER, DANCING, COCKTAILS' I just try to imagine the smartly dressed men and women who passed through those doors, so long ago.

I'm sure it was the kind of place depicted in this song, shadowy corners and all.

    DINNER, DANCING, COCKTAILS

  • Awwwwwwwww Da 50's was a Great Era for the Innovator's of a New Sound in Music !
