Nakamura Matagoro II prepares David Furumoto for his performance as Oboshi Yuranosuke in the UH production of the classic kabuki play Chushingura the 47 Samurai. At the time Matagoro sensei was chief instructor for the kabuki training program at the National Theatre of Japan. Matagoro sensei took a year away from his duties there to direct the UH production and to train the student actors. They learned their lines first in Japanese and then again in English for the actual performances. Training began in August of 1978 and the final performance was in June of 1979.
