Crystal Silence - Chick Corea

This is a Chick Corea tune that is haunting and spare. The modal changes interest me the most with this song. His duo with Burton on vibes is amazing. I play it out of time and without swing to maximize the feel, but it is improvised. If I were to do this over, I would not do this as slow and would put more energy into it, but I was thinking "tranquil" at the time.

A very, very fine and emotive rendering of one of Corea's icon pieces. I love the descending bass line on the left hand starting at 1'24''.

Man watching you play makes me so uncomfortable because it's all in the fingers and there's no body movement; but you know what, that's the way it should be! I can't stand over-dramatic pianists who lean back-and-forth and every which way; as if it makes them sound any better... you show yourself to be 10x better than them because you already play better than them first of all and secondly it's all coming just from your hands and nothing else! Now THAT's cool!!! :D

How was I introduced to this song ?

In May 2009 I was on holiday In Cape Town with girlfriend Vanessa.

We stayed at the end with one of my best friend's Quentin.

His wife played this one night on a beat up upright.

There is something haunting about this piano piece.
