Viewers will step back in time over 30 years to the closing days of the 3 foot narrow gauge operations of the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad.

This film was shot by noted railroad photographer Emery Gulash in the area from Alamosa to Chama, NM.. Actual freight operations of the period feature double heading and the use of mid-train helpers.

There are many scenes in the yards with engines being prepared for runs, as well as trains being assembled with their respective motive power needs. The running shots display the narrow gauge engines working hard in the spectacular mountain scenery for which the D&RG was so well known.

This video is an incredible time capsule of working narrow gauge freight operations long past.

  • Well coal vs. diesel the coal is actually cheaper. Steam engines can pull longer and faster trains than diesels can. It think your an old waste of air, maybe we should drag you to the meat packaging plant and make you into some nice dog food.

Everybody has there own opinion, but unfortunately I can't act on mine...

  • Bastard!! Ride behind these things and thing make your opinion!

  • ATTENTION!!! There are narrow gauge mikados in guatemala, looking for a new home!! Could ANY of them be donated to CO??

  • @Cockroach2008 Steam will always be king, the museum I work for is finishing the restoration on one locomotive, operates one on weekends, and is supplying the steam for the new Norfolk Southern Steam Excursion Program.

  • what song is that being played on the banjo?

  • @Owner4567 If you know anything about country music, you know who Johnny Cash WAS!

He has been dead nearly 5 years, but he still got it "One Piece at a Time" and it didn't cost him a dime. Just like the steam locomotive can be taken apart & sold for those who need quick cash with no questions asked.

Remove those steam locomotive whistles, bells, gauges, headlights, marker lights, number lights, hoses & get paid large amounts of cash with no questions asked!

    Junk the steam locomotive!

  • You can hope all you want, but the steam locomotives are headed for scrap!

As the employment picture worsens, the foreclosure picture worsens, the economy worsens, those people who need cash quickly will help themselves to recyclable metal from sources which were once considered too difficult to be worthwhile.

Now, they are very easy targets to acquire parts from; whistles, bells, gauges, headlights & many other parts which when removed render them inoperable.

    That is serving people well!

  • Johnny Cash? oh please, i know who johnny cash is. LIAR

  • never

  • @Owner4567 I feel like Johnny Cash, we take them apart one piece at a time & it doesn't cost me a dime!

I am here to stay! Learn to live with it as this steam locomotive garbage is taken apart!

    Junk the steam locomotives!

  • you

  • @Owner4567 I am here to stay! If you don't like what I have to say, you go away!
