Pookie loves this story. The Opals were formed in East Chicago, Ind., and discovered by the Dell's Mickey McGill at Steve's Chicken Shack in Gary!! Steve's Chicken Shack?? Anyhow, Mickey knew talent and took these girls to both Calvin Carter and Carl Davis. While at VJ, they became the 'Shoop Shoop' girls on Betty Everett's hit, 'It's In His Kiss' in '63. Carl Davis put the quartet together with Curtis Mayfield who wrote this great song for them. The Opals at this time were Rosie 'Tootsie' Addison, Rose E. Kelley, Myra Tillotson, and Betty Blackmon. Betty soon dropped out, but not before lending her voice to this Chicago Classic. The lead of Rose Kelley is superb, and this is the definitive version of this Curtis Mayfield masterpiece. This perhaps is one of the first discs that joined the writing skills of Curtis with the arranging of Johnny Pate. The Opals made a couple more discs, but never achieved real stardom, though that would have been deserving. They continued on, backing a list of Chicago's finest, Walter Jackson and Jerry Butler among them. Enjoy one of those Pookie favorites that just exclaims, 'This is Chicago Soul'. From Pookie's 'How did this not become a big hit?' list Are the Opals still around? I understand a couple of the girls added their voices to some tracks on the Dells 'Reminiscing' CD a couple years ago!! You go girls!!

  • BAD LIL COVER!

  • Wow, thank you so much for the wonderful job! My mother was in The Opals and it blows my mind that someone actually knows about them.

  • Love it !

  • Ahhh Pookie - brought back many happy memories of my old Okeh compilation LP :) That has the other version but either is a killer - many thanks!

  • @KOPAU1624 No it is still by the Opals. It is mixed differently. I think they did a 1964 version and a 1965 version. I've never heard the Chandlers version.

  • @leigy you mean the Chandlers. That was an oldies version BTW

  • There's another version of this song...it;s still by the Opals. But it has more horns, and the lead is pushed ahead.

  • Very COOL.
