Dear President Obama,

You recently signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).  This act allows for the indefinite detention of U.S. citizens on U.S. soil without due process.  If the executive branch determines a person is a terrorist threat, it can imprison him or her without warrant, judicial oversight, due process, or any means to face your accuser. It contravenes habeas corpus, the only individual right stated in the pre-amendment part of our Constitution and the most fundamental right of a citizen.  It also allows the use of the Armed Forces on U.S. soil against U.S. citizens.

This law is dangerous and unconstitutional. It declares the U.S. a battlefield where military troops could break down your door and haul you away forever. I am personally disappointed that you signed the NDAA. You did express doubts about these provisions previously and in your signing statement. This gives me hope that you will rectify this situation.

I humbly ask you to propose to Congress an American freedom act that restores and protects our habeas corpus and 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th Amendments rights. Since 9/11/01 the rights of average Americans have been sacrificed in the name of security but as Ben Franklin said: "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Restoring American's liberties has support of voters across the political spectrum and deserves the attention that you can bring to it.

This bill should include provisions that do the following:
1. Prevents the use of the military against U.S. citizens on U.S. soil.
2. Prevents the indefinite detention of anyone without trail.
3. Prevents the surveillance of U.S. citizens without Judicial oversight.

I ask this as someone who enthusiastically voted for you in 2008, as part of the 99%, and as a concerned citizen. Please stand for individuals over the military-industrial complex. Restore confidence in and remove fear of the Federal Government. I and many, many others will remember this action come election day.

Thank you,
Toby

  • I think that you made your point very strongly. I respect your drive to express your dissatisfaction with Obama's signing of the NDAA. Those that are critical of your attempt to let the President know how his action has dissappointed you, a citizen that voted for him, need to come up with their own ideas to contribute to solutions. Good job Toby!

  • @se256mn Thank you :)

  • 1) the bill was veto proof, 2) the President does not write Legislation, 3) US citizens are excluded, 4) this Legislation passed every year since originally wrote in 2001, 5) if you have a problem with this type of Legislation promote voting those who wrote this Legislation out of office starting with the Senate armed services committee, thats who wrote it, 6) personally I am way more upset with the fact Congress and the Senate just authorized spending yet another 700 billion for the military.

  • @TheMasonguitars I hear you but lets fight for our rights. This issue is important to me so I made my opinion heard. I agree with most of the points you made.
