South Bends Skylar Diggins checked into the Notre Dame lineup at the 15:42 mark of the first half of Tuesdays womens basketball exhibition game against the University of Indianapolis.Within a minute, she let the packed crowd at the Purcell Pavilion at the Joyce Center know the type of impact she would be making for the Irish.

Diggins took a feed from Brittany Mallory and drove in from the left. She put a little too much energy into the layup, and it kissed off the orange rim. Seconds after the miss, Diggins dove and stole the ball, kicking out a pass to a hustling Mallory for a layup.

No. 4-ranked Notre Dame went on to crush Indianapolis, 97-53. The Irish open the regular season Nov. 15 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Finishing with a team-high 17 points and four rebounds, Diggins began her collegiate career in dazzling fashion. But the 5-foot-9 freshman guard, last seasons national high school player of the year, admitted to having to battle some nerves before Tuesdays tip-off.

All day, I was just like, Oh, my goodness. I just cant wait to get to this game, Diggins said.

Even coming out in front of the community, the community thats been supporting me for years, and seeing some familiar faces from when we played at Washington, just seeing those people come out and support Notre Dame was special, Diggins continued. Once I finally got in there, coach told me to relax and play my game, and I just tried to do that.I just waited my turn. Thats fine. I understand that Im a freshman. I just want to get in there and try my best when its my time. Thats what I can control.

Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw said that its important to handle the transition to college ball appropriately.
