An RAF Tristar from RAF Akrotiri is foreced to make an emergency landing at Edinburgh Airport in Scotland.

Apparently there was an issue with it's wings.

It did around 10 high passes over the airport with it's gear down in an attempt to slow it down. It eventually landed on runway 024 and was met by 4 fire engines.

It was then escorted slowly down the old runway.

The plane departed Edinburgh Aiport at 3.30pm for RAF Brize Norton in England.

  • horrible planes to fly on. i wasnt scared of flying till i flew on one to afghanistan. hopefully never again!

  • Looks like flaps didn't deploy...

  • @nrodar I can see slats/ leading edge devices and spoilers/air brakes but there are no extended flaps/trailing edge devices

  • What camera did you use, the video quality is amazing.

  • @sherodyn at 2:05 u can see the flaps...

  • Flapless landing perhaps.....?

  • @mesocat Well there is actually 2, Orbital Science flies there Tristar which was converted to a 200 from a 100 last year with the changing of the engines to -524. There are 2 others that are in flying condition N723DA a -1 which was overhauled in 06 to go to TransAtlantic airlines which never started service. It still sits with engines and could be serviceable. Also N700TS a 100 that flew to Kansas City last yr could fly if it had engines and had some more prep work but it probably wont fly.

  • @loaferguy73 It looks like the wing spoilers weren't properly deployed on landing. This may have resulted in hot brakes and the captain may have been using the #2 engine thrust reverser as a brake, hence the opening and closing. So sorry we only have one Tristar flying in the States now ( Las Vegas Sands N388LS) Have fond memories of flying them as a kid!

  • If you notice closely the thrust reverser on the #2 engine opens and closes, open and closes and opens....Bet you it was a prob with that. Spurious Tristars never had stuctural problems in the late 70's, its similiar looking competitor the DC-10 did although. It had problems with engine mounting, cargo door issues.

  • Excellent video! I saw this circling over Edinburgh Waverley station! Check out the video response.
