I don't think I have these woods where I live or it is not all that common. May be willow and Ashe. But not in abundance. More Poplar oak pine maple birch. I know this is not easy I tried it today and it was a fail. Plenty of smoke but couldn't maintain a coal. I am not sure what I did wrong. My understanding was using soft wood like poplar and pine as the fire board and hard wood for the spindle is this correct?

Thank you falsomknapper. That is a huge and probably much undeserved compliment. I'm just somebody who got addicted to this method and really wanted to explore it. I benefited greatly from having a few mentors to help me learn the basics. I'm still by no means a master of the technique but my practice sessions have made me more confident. If you ever need help or have any specific questions I'd be glad to answer them. Sincerely, ken
