"I'm thirsty..."
"I'm scared..."
"I'm not tired..."
...are just some excuses parents hear every night putting their kids to bed. Adam Mansbach, an author and a dad, finally used these frustrations to write his latest book.
"Surely you've heard of the book that is the publishing phenomenon of the year -- the book that debuted number one on the New York Times best selling list. For advice titles -- "Go the blank to sleep. It's a hysterical book about how stressful parenting can be and it's touched a national nerve." (MSNBC)
The idea for Mansbach's book was initially a joke but then he ran with it. He tells CNN where his inspiration came from...
"After a particularly arduous night putting my two year old daughter Vivien, my wonderful, lovely, beautiful two-year-old daughter Vivien to sleep, I put a post on Facebook saying be on the lookout for my forthecoming children's book "Go the F to sleep." And you know as soon as I put that on Facebook, even though it was a joke, I realized I knew exactly what that book sounded like and looked like so a couple of weeks later I sat down and actually wrote it." (CNN)
This book was originally supposed to be released in October but popularity after it leaked lead the publishers to have it out in time for Father's Day. For some parents it was an immediate hit. One parent tells the New York Post why...
"On some of the nights that sleepy time entails significantly more than a few lullabies, the phrase has crossed my mind. [This book] validates my frustration and reminds me that other people are going through it and we'll all survive."
But not everyone is laughing... another author writes for FOX and explains why he thinks this new hit is too crude.
"...I'm concerned that vulgarity has now officially entered the mainstream of our culture... Does the fact these things are in the eyes of the beholder mean that we cannot have some public standards? Or that we shouldn't at least try?"
One mother is concerned, but not with the vulgarity of the book -- more that she thinks she couldn't have written the book herself.
"What if a mom had beaten a dad to the punchline and published a book called Go the F*** to Sleep? As much as I want to believe that 'funny is funny...' I can't help but think that things might have gone down differently. While a mom who even thinks, "Go the f*** to sleep" is seen as morally lacking, unfit, unhinged, deranged, and hostile, a dad who thinks it is someone we want to have a beer with." (Jezebel)
While there's much debate on the moral standing of the book, the popularity is undeniable -- especially since the audio version is being voiced by the cussing connoisseur himself, Samuel L Jackson.
"The eagles who soar through the sky are at rest and the creatures who crawl, run and creep. I know you're not thirsty,. That's bulls**t. Stop lying. Lie the f*** down, my darling, and sleep." (CBS)
Already movie rights for this book have been sold to FOX and Mansbach is planning on releasing a children-safe version of the story in time for the holidays.
