Most people don't bother with black walnuts, because even though they are delicious, they are considered too difficult to shuck. However, I discovered a very easy way to do it using an ordinary metal conduit hanger. These are available at hardware or electrical supply stores, and a #2 clamp (meant for 1" EMT but it expands to around 1 1/2") is the perfect size for this task. As it is pounded, it slices through the green fruit and encircles the nut with just the right amount of springiness, causing it to pop out easily, without the sloppiness of the various mashing methods. Do this outside and wear rubber gloves, and you will find that there is very little mess involved.

  • Great idea! I wish I had seen your video 1500 walnuts ago!! I just took my laptop out to the back porch and watched a movie while twisting away to get a couple hundred done. I'll definitely try your method next time. Thanks!

  • A nice system - good tip.
