There was a backlash by the gay community because this movie portrays gays as random sexual partners. Also, the aids rumor started because of activities such as this. However, research shows more hetrosexual people worldwide have that horrible disease, than homosexual. I love everyone, who cares who you put your tackle to? We're all human! Love the gays!

I don't know - De Niro's pretty diverse. I've seen him play a southerner ("Cape Fear"), a mental patient ("Awakenings") a lonely introvert ("Taxi Driver") and a sociopathic, aspiring comic ("The King of Comedy"). That in addition to his very psychologically and emotionally complex Italian anti-heroes.

yeah obviously, heterosexuals make up 95% of the population, whereas homosexes make up 5%.

This movie is worth watching just for that '70s NYC' feel. Amazing.

im not offended. but again, "the gay biker scene" is/was not as dark as this film makes it out to be. either way, i dont really think the gay activists or what have you had much of a choice as to "liking" this film. and i am sure some thought it added to the grittyness and toughness to their culture. but most people i know hated this film. only because it painted gays in an even darker light. but everyone has their own opinion.

I know Friedkin's work well, which makes Cruising even more disappointing, especially after the amazing Boys In The Band. According to IMDB, Shame cost $6,500,000 to make and took in $4,000,304

William Friedkin truly is one of the best filmmakers of the New Hollywood era. He (like Scorsese, Coppola, Spielberg and De Palma) pushed the boundaries of filmmaking! Friedkin also directed "The Exorcist" and "The Franch Connection" - which was the very first R-rated film to win the Best Picture Oscar. I disagree about the NC-17 rating as a kiss of death. "Shame" (which was released back in 2011) was a financial success.

I forgot that that in the pre-dominated world of PC liberal media that someone would be offended. It was a different time in history, Friedkin was simply identifying a certain aspect of the sub-culture of the "gay biker scene". The portrait the film paints isn't flattering, it isn't supposed to be. Friedkin even acknowledged that gay historians addressed the accuracy of the film for its time.

whats funny is how the leather community is portrayed as something creepy and dangerous. or maybe thats not so funny. its just a little too obvious, and im not sure what audience this film was trying to reach. today, this would be just another law and order episode.
