How To Remove A Tick

A paralysis tick just killed one of my beautiful cats today, here on the Australian NSW Northern Beaches. Her name was Mitten and she was 12 or so years old but looked like a kitten. She was very small and had a squeaky meow :)
I found her yesterday in the gutter, unable to move her body at all. I felt the tick as soon as I picked her up. I pulled the tick out immediately and rushed her to the vet, but she passed away early this morning.

i used to live in the woods and go hunting and camping alot so i cant count how many ticks ive had. one thing i noticed is if you pull the tick out, the head remains behind- under the skin which makes it itch like hell.

What happens If we don't do it with a slow movement?
Based on comments, it's clear that many people still foster hope for the folk remedy of touching the tick with a hot object to make it detach. Please take a look at "how NOT to remove a tick" on TickEncounter/education/how_not_to_remove_a_tick for reasons this is incorrect.
