A blow-off takes the air between your recently-closed throttle and turbo and vents it to atmosphere so that the turbo doesnt try to push air through the throttle plate, a diesel doesnt have a throttle body so it's either a ebay bov sound producer or he put some kind of whistle on his wastegate..

check wikipedia for that no gear stuff, seems to be pretty wrong (other sources say so too).
the difference is that automatics have hydrodynamic torque converters instead of a clutch. you are right about the destroying part though.
