First of all, I have never been to California, so I have no horse in this race. But I've seen this play many times, and did not see a forward lateral. I does appear that the player who received the second lateral MAY HAVE had his knee down on the turf before he lateralled the ball. This has been looked into time and again, and it could not be determined with any certainty that he was or wasn't down. The officials made the call, and that's that. It's history now...most amazing play ever.

The actual video from 1982 shows that the player's knee was down when he still had the ball and that the final lateral was forward.
