In the final days of the Canadian federal election in January 2006, federal NDP leader Jack Layton came to the riding of Edmonton-Strathcona to support local candidate Linda Duncan. She went on to place second to incumbent Conservative Rahim Jaffer, taking almost twice as many votes as the third-place Liberal candidate and giving Jaffer the narrowest win he'd experienced since his election in 1997.
