No doubt the beauty currency is way overvalued today. But it has always been a big deal. I think it is extreme to just blame modern commercialism. Smarter, more talented, more interesting, more valuable, or better looking people have always had more power in society. Things have always been easier for them. Instead of griping about the anthropology of that fact, suggestion: people who want it easier, should focus on being smarter, more interesting, better looking, etc. Exploit the value.
