If anyone were expecting an upset or another nail-biting finish similar to Iowa a week ago, they would've been disappointed. Mitt Romney, the former Governor of Massachusetts, followed up his victory in Iowa by scoring a thumping win in New Hampshire today. Romney's 40% was a marginally better result than John McCain's 37% four years ago. For all the talk of an unelectable Romney and the grueling search for an anti-Romney alternative, he is the first non-incumbent to win both in Iowa and New Hampshire.

Twelve-term Texas Congressman Ron Paul came in second, almost tripling his 2008 numbers by capturing 23% of the votes, giving another warning that he remains firmly in contention for the nomination. Former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman Jr., meanwhile, came in third with 17%, a result that gave his campaign a sorely needed burst of fresh air.

Iowa runner-up Rick Santorum could only manage fifth here, fractionally behind Newt Gingrich's 10% fourth-place finish. Texas Governor Rick Perry rounded up the evening with a miserable 0.7%.

However, all is not lost for Perry, as well as Santorum and Gingrich. The race heads for South Carolina in 11 days, and while the voting demographics there are not as conservative as Iowa, they are definitely a little more to the right compared to New Hampshire. Another Romney victory in South Carolina would render the race practically over. This perhaps explains the over five millions dollars scheduled to be spent in anti-Romney campaign ads in the Palmetto State in the next several days, a situation that has left the GOP leadership a little worried about its national and long-term impact on their presumptive nominee. issues bases on the american people apply Presidential Candidates Age & Birthdate
