  • My graphics design teacher back in high school answered a similar question. He said that if you're good at drawing then that's great, you can get your ideas down faster than others, but in the end it's the design concept that matters.

  • Agreed! Be great at Illustration or great at GD! Pick one, and you can demand more money, too!

  • @balinmar, I think there's some truth to your statement but, I work at a design school and we are consistently disappointed in how many applicants have no skills nor any interest in improving their drawing. It may become a thing of the past but not so long ago, having a graphic designer in the room meant you'd get a professional sketch or concept draft on paper in a matter of seconds. These days many of these kids can barely doodle (both by hand or pen tool).. sad.

  • so u dont take that many illustration courses for a gd degree? but shouldnt they teach u how to draw at a really advanced level?

do they teach u like prospective and stuff like that?

what type of courses do u take? thanks

  • i find it cooler if you're creative enough to create stuff like that

  • You should if you follow the Principles of Design. Back in the days there were no Computers. Everything was by hand. If you don't draw...you are 75% off your skills. These days. Simple as that.

  • @Yamcha67

I totally agree with you. Speed-shifting your brain from design to code (let alone illustration) is a nightmare and totally not cost-efficient. It's way more productive to come together as a team of two or three people than attempting to be all-in-one. That's how it is with me now and I totally know my income to be way below what it could be if I found good Photoshop and Illustrator people to work with me. Unfortunately, in a small town there's a shortage of professionals.

  • everyone thinks Graphic Design is about drawing. It seems that everyone who is artistic or likes to draw goes into GD as their mayor. Thats why there are so many GD mayors.

  • Yeah I've personally noted that if you focus on one thing your work ends up being great.. but if you want to be good at illustration + web design + coding.. it really takes a lot of hard work, and i think most of us can't really manage that.. I know I can't.. :p infact I don't really know any good designer that can do all those things.. I know a few people who are great at coding, but there design skills are pretty bad..

  • oh ok. then can you please explain the degree for games development and what """"graphic design"""" is reallY?
