Iranian Omid Satellite Placed In Orbit By Safir 2 Rocket. Iran has successfully sent its first domestically made satellite into orbit, another development in the country's ambitious space program that has worried many international observers. Some western observers have accused Tehran of exaggerating its space program.

The satellite called Omid, or hope in Farsi, was launched late Monday on Feb 2nd 2009 (Washington time) after President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad gave the order to proceed. The satellite was taken into orbit by a Safir-2, or ambassador-2 rocket, which was first tested in August and has a range of 155 miles (250 kilometers). Omid is Iran's second satellite in orbit. A previous Iranian satellite, Sinah 1, was built and launched for Iran by Russia in 2005.

BZZZZ. The Iranian space agency was started in 1974 by the Shah's government. The only thing the "islamic" government accomplished was delay everything by 40 years (including the nuclear electric power plant program). Meanwhile the Americans/British helped the arabs start a war against Iran at the same time in 1980 murdering 1 million Iranian children . The Shah would have put Iran on Mars by now.
