This is one of the many Freightliner rear loaders in the Watts Waste fleet, not exactly sure how old, but old enough. This truck seems to be used mainly on the bottles recycling run, which particularly involves collecting the glass from restaurants and cafes within my region.

I'd been wanting to get this truck in action for a while, but it had been hard to find. However, during one Monday when I'd just finished on the Doyles run, I took a quick look in the industrial area to see if I could find anything. Being after midday my hopes were low, but I surprisingly bumped into this truck after a minute of riding! Unfortunately, where I ended up videoing him was a long distance from where I was, so it took a real effort to beat him to the next stop, but worth the effort in the end - luckily I had the bike :)

Thanks very much to the friendly driver of this truck and I hope you all enjoy the footage of this oldie, ratings and comments are highly appreciated.

Body Make: MacDonald Johnston

  • isnt this stop in ur vids later on when that new compaction systems working for watts waste emptied 2 1.5s and a couple of 1100s?

  • Yep, it's the exact same stop.

  • what the... never seen this truck before

  • Very rare trucks now; this is the last on the Northern Beaches, only a handful in the rest of Sydney.

  • Havent you gotten one of these on a tandem axle truck before?

  • Yes I did, that was the walkaround I did from a while back.

  • I love the old Watts Waste trucks. They have character...

  • Yep, when it comes to ASL's dumpin glass breakage isn't as high.

  • Oh I agree with you about ear plugs mate, a good safety initiative for these bottles recycling routes... especially if you're standing right beside the "crash area" =] There's been some collections where I've been dumping bins at, and as soon as the bin's tipped upside down... you don't hear the sound of the truck's engine revving at 1000RPM, don't hear the roaring traffic on the main road... just a deafening clattering + crashing + smashing sound!

  • You can betya, RLs turn glass into sand! lol Reckon jack shit for whole pieces of glass comes out of rear loaders.

  • What the heck a Freightliner!
