Here's an improvement to your design. Roll up some paper into a tight roll, and place 2/3 of it into the bottle, then allow it to open becoming tight around the lip of the bottle. Flies fly in, and can't get out.

WaterMelon seems to be their FAVIORT fruit, I did this with a small 1.5 liter soda bottle and cut the top off and put a peice of plastic wrap over it and cut a whole in it and then put another peice of plastic wrap over that one and put a rubber band around it,(they where figuring out how to get out of the plastic wrap hole) and put a hole in that one, they could figure out how to get out of the first one but where dump enough NOT to figure out how to get out of the second one=)

@xKeffinx I don't know either, it must be cause it is upside down or something. Once in a while one will get out so I keep an eye on it and empty it when it gets a little full.
A better top is to roll paper into a cone shape with a small hole at the point big enough for one to get thru and put it in the bottle end with the point down. They really have a hard time getting out with this. Sorry I have not had a chance to film this over using a paper cone instead of plastic. Works much better.
