I'm using the interchange between Greg Monroe and theClarkianCalvinist as an example. There's a reason the Church historically Catechized their new converts, and that is so they don't do something stupid like shipwreck their faith... Or talk about something they've never even thought about before.

Long story, short; Greg Monroe received a comment on his video about head knowledge versus heart knowledge. The comment referred to "Propositional Revelation", which is a concept that Greg Monroe admits in his video he never heard of till just then... And what's more, he's looking up the concept while making the video, whereupon he reads its quickly and then begins to espouse on it.

Now Greg. You made this public. You got on camera and basically made a fool of yourself. You've done this before, and admitted in private that this is a failing of yours. But this is a failing of most of Evangelicalism. They talk about things they know nothing about because it feels good when someone (who is unaware they are being hoodwinked) says, "wow, you're smart", or whatever platitude they may...

  • Should we not follow the example of Jesus? If I ate, thought, acted, dressed, groomed, followed the entire Law, prayed continually, never sinning and had no personal possessions or desire for things of this world and walked like Jesus preaching the Good News would I receive eternal life?

  • @AikenBruce If you did, but you don't. Following Jesus' "example" would only get you condemned. Jesus, in doing what the law demanded, won eternal life for you and gives it to you freely.

  • I was raised in a "non-denominational", rather, evangelical, church. The pastor and the majority of his staff; Sunday school teachers, co-pastors, prophets, etc., had no theological degrees and most were nubile Christians; at least those who taught the children and the youth were, anyways.

The point is, Bible illiterate people were teaching. I can recall numerous times where their illiteracy caused problems in my life, and in the church.

    It was a dreadful experience.

  • Been there myself. I don't understand how it is that someone can pretend that they can do this kind of work but not know anything about it. The only kind of person I know of who believes that is someone who does it as a hobby... and even then, we don't allow people to do things like open heart surgery as a hobby. Like you pointed out, it causes problems to say the least. At worst, you wind up with broken hearts.

  • The King James version renders it better. The point is that these men who promote circumcision are unclean in their doctrine and Paul wishes that they would cut themselves off from the congregation as unclean as the foreskin of the penis is severed in circumcision .

  • You are correct, Matthew. Words and their definitions are important. Precise theological definition will help us to avoid fallacies of ambiguity. Every Christian should study ambiguity. God bless.

  • Interesting.

  • For missing the point, and having such an ironic name, you get a warning. Do something this stupid again and your blocked.

  • Remarkable analogy, and I agree. Back when I was in the automotive industry we had a similar problem with sending technicians to assembly plants to describe the color deviations on the cars against the master standard. Some would say it was light to the standard, some would say pale, a little blue, slightly reddish. every one had a way of describing color. so they developed an instrument that converted the color into a numeric value. Now if they could only come up with one for religion. ;-)

  • Great video!
