Athletes from over 200 countries around the world entered the Beijing National Stadium for the parade of nations, the order of which was determined by the stroke number of the countries' Chinese names. NBA player and local hero Yao Ming carried the flag for Team China.

After the amazing spectacle of the Opening Ceremony, the 2008 Beijing Olympics closed with similar grandeur on August 24th in a flurry of fireworks, pyrotechnics, and song and dance performances, again directed by renowned filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Hero). The night's lineup included mass dance and aerial performances around the "memory tower", an eight-minute presentation of the 2012 London Olympics, and performances by Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Rain, Leehom Wang, Kelly Chen, Joey Yung, Nicholas Tse, and Stefanie Sun, as well as British stars Leona Lewis and Jimmy Page and operatic tenor Placido Domingo. The ceremony afforded both a touching recap of the previous 16 days of competition, and a look ahead with the passing of the Olympics flag to the mayor of London, host of the 2012 Summer Olympics.
