A flight crew welcomed school children hoping to peak their interest in science and to increase awareness about hurricane season, which begins on the first day of June.

The Lockheed WP-3D Orion, built in 1975 and first used to fly into Hurricane Bonnie, is equipped with elaborate data and instrumentation systems to help meteorologists at the National Hurricane Center forecast storms.

"We couldn't do our job without it. Anytime the storm threatens the coast, deep south Texas, those planes are our eyes and ears into what's going on with the storm," said Nezette Rydell, Meteorologist in Charge at the National Weather Service office in Brownsville.
