Hey, Merrihew, you should try needles of thornwood. I only use that with my HMV163. I use a B.C.N sharpener to sharpen them. They are not good for all records, but HMVs and Victors from around 1925-1931 combine very well with them. It is just the brand and period for that machine.

After his bout with the tumor, he retrained himself as a baritone. The beautiful timbre was not longer there, but with his musicality and interpretive skills intact, he conducted master classes all over the U.S. (I attended one as an undergrad at Mannes College in New York.) And he taught for a time at the university in Boulder Colorado. He was a stunning inspiration.

Oh great! I once wrote an article about this wonderful Danish singer in the Swedish music journal Musikdramatik. His career was interrupted by a brain tumor! But before that he sang with Kathleen Ferrier a lot - for example in the world première of Britten´s opera The Rape of Lucretia! (alternated with Peter Pears.) He also recorded Schumann´s Dichterliebe and Schubert´s Die schöne Müllerin with Gerald Moore. Superb recordings!

My mother used to play Schiotz's records when I was a child; I never thought I would find him on
Youtube. Thank you so much for this video!

a top-notch lieder singer who's unfortunately under the radar of most voice lovers. thanks for posting this.- rather risqué of you to play this disk on that machine, no?
I only play less than perfect records on this machine (and only once) and use the highest quality needles. For viewers not familiar, the records are very hard and were molded with an abrasive that was meant to wear down a soft needle rather than the other way around.
