http://www.treasurebone.blogspot.com Dave Taylor and Ian Miles, from Dalton, are a metal detecting team and though they have only been hunting together for a few months they have already made a number of terrific finds.

Recently they found a pair of Roman coins and one is quite rare. The Roman coins were found separately but in rapid succession of each other. Taylor's coin was found first followed by Miles' find.

Experts examined the coins and determined they were from 67 AD and 119 AD during the reigns of Emperors Nero and Hadrian, with the Nero era coin being singaled out and labeled as "Quite Rare". Since the coins were found separately and from different eras, they do not fall under the classification of Treasure.

Taylor said "It takes a lot of patience. We are out every night. You're always hoping to make that little line in the history books.

"It's like winning the lottery. If we were to find a hoard, I would rather keep it locally, maybe in the Dock Museum. It's history from this area, so it should stay here." He went on to say "We would always split any of our finds 50/50 with the farmers. Even if we aren't selling it, we would find out how much it was worth and give them half the money. We can't thank them enough. Without their permission, we couldn't do anything.

"We like to go back and show them what we have found. Then they come out with all sorts of stories and it tips you off to look in other areas. It's great. Also, with us on the land, it means they have an extra pair of eyes out. It's added security."

An anonymous poster going by "not convinced" had this to say in the comments section of the article: "something isnt right about this article and the pictures that accompany it, this sounds to me to be a public relations excersise in order to gain more land to detect on and appear to be whiter than white to land owners who will no doubt be reading this article, as for running around the feild after you had found a roman coin you have been detecting years my freind and you have found hundreds of roman coins the coins are different colours as if they are from different soil conditions so who are you trying to fool the public or the farmers, im sorry but i believe you are jumping on the local viking hoard bandwagon for your own self gain in obtaining more land to detect on, so my freind if you did find these coins locally (i dont think you did personally) good luck to you both"

Though I was unable to find any pictures of these coins in the article, I personally, think Mr. or Ms. "Not Convinced" is a coward and if the really wanted to make a point or legitimate statement they should not have hidden behind their security blanket of anonymity.

I found the information for this vlog at: Northwest Evening News and you can find the link to that article on my blog at www.treasurebone.blogspot.com.

As always take care and happy hunting. Bye.

  • I've studied and collected ancient Roman coins for over 25 years. Most ARE NOT "quite rare". Most that are loose and in the acidic ground are lumps of metal with no details, at all. A low grade Roman bronze coin WITH details can be had for a couple bucks. If you want a rare Roman coin, buy it at auction from a reputable dealer...

  • Great video ! Ha! Ha! i wish you and i could find something that old.
