Yes, it's my favourite Kinks song too, by a mile and I really like all their stuff. As you said, maybe the authors know something we don't, but I don't get that vibe they're talking about at all. There's nothing about the delivery that tells me Ray or any of the other guys is going through the motions. It's a serious and possibly very personal song (given what we now know about Ray's life at the time) but I'm hearing the earnestness and (albeit subdued) passion loud and clear.
