Basically here's a cool idea I'd like to put forward:

It's already well known that console commands can allow for various modifications of your source gaming experience. Since Portal is a source game this means that the portal engine (for PC) can be easily modified.

This is basically a video example and guide for "newbies" to source. (Yes I know I'm not the first person to link multiple portal sets, hence this only being a guide).

First you'll need to enable your console by going into the keyboard settings and clicking "advanced settings" checking off "enable developer console".

The console code to enable many "cheat" codes is sv_Cheats 1 (0 for off, 1 for on— basic binary logic).

The code mostly used in this video is: change_portalgun_linkage_id

Follow change_portalgun_linkage_id with a number (the default is 0), like so:

change_portalgun_linkage_id 1
change_portalgun_linkage_id 2
change_portalgun_linkage_id 3
change_portalgun_linkage_id 50

Basically the linkage ID stands for a PAIR of portals (that is TWO portals, an in and out).

To link several portals together you'd line one "out" portal with another "in" portal.

Thus you can have lots and lots of fun making linked portals, including links that go on and on forever. In this video I have a continuous loop of 46 (23 sets) of portals with the last portal linking back to being right above the first. The hardest parts to set up were the wall-to-wall jumps. Wall-to-floor is probably second easiest with ceiling-to-floor and floor-to-ceiling tied for easiest to set up.

Other ideas might be to use these links for objects too. Like drop a crate or combine ball inside and watch it get flung all over the place.

Until a working multiplayer mod of portal comes out (With actually working multiple sets of portals) this is as good as it gets for using more than one set of portals.

You might be wondering how I placed the portals on non-portal surfaces. In this case I used the following code:

sv_portal_placement_never_fail 1

On an interesting side note: Notice how Chell kind of looks stupid flying about in third person? It occurred to me that if a multiplayer version of portal were to be professionally produced they might want to re-think the ways in which the characters move around through the portals and in the air. I think they might want to get the TF2 team of animators on it as that method of flailing about while flying could add a level of entertainment to watching others fly around and use the portals. Anyone else have thoughts on the subject?

It's good that the change_portalgun_linkage_id code exists in the portal console as that could make it easier for multiplayer mod developers to work out how multiple players could possess multiple portals. Each user, for instance, could have an assigned ID set of portals.

On a final note: I don't want to be a showoff but... check out my portal achievements page: http://steamcommunity.com/id/ianboswell/stats/Portal I'm... kind of proud... The challenges weren't too hard, but the timed ones were a real pain.

Oh and feel free to reply to this video showcasing your own strung-together sets of portals! Good luck out there, everybody! And have lots of fun!
