Pool (no water) by Mark Ravenhill

This is a recording of our Theatre Studies A.S Level Practical Exam at Calday Grange Grammar School in March 2009.

Pool (no water) was first performed by Frantic Assembly, a Theatre company who focus mainly on physical theatre and the portrayal of a story through movement just as much as through words.

It is a story of a group of 4 artists who have been close friends for many years and gone through the highs and lows of being amateur artists. One of their friends, who used to be a fifth member of their little group, made it big in the art world and went from the street art these 4 try to live off, to living in the big time, big house, flashy car, loads of money. This artist invites her 4 old friends round for a get together one night, during which she jumps into her pool .... 'we thought we heard the splash ... but there was no splash ...' She hits the bottom of the empty pool and ends up in hospital. The 4 amateur artists round her bedside start to see 'beauty' in the image of her mangled body and begin to make an art project based on her injuries. Their moral compasses are thrown out the window and their minds become infected with the evil and sadistic idea of turning her near death into art in a way of revenge for how she simply dumped them when she made it big. But there is a major twist ... was this all planned ... and if so, who planned it to happen ...?

  • im doing this for a G.C.S.E can you give me any tips? thanks

  • @alexlathey ye sure! I would say to start with, make sure you know the style you want to do it in and make that your focus! the script isn't very structured and so you can play around with that and get rid of the bits you don't need or don't fit in with your style and the flow of the piece. Once you get going, just experiment. Come up with ideas and just try them, if they don't work, try something else. We liked to change our music to see if we could still do the piece but at different speeds!!

  • @alexlathey changing the music just makes you focus more on your acting rather than the music and effects! its up to you how you do it of course ... you could do it very physical like us, you could do it in the style of artaud or berkhoff, but i personally think it should be done using physical theatre! but go with whatever suits your group best really! but if you work hard and just experiment and see what happens, im sure you will make a great piece and you will certainly love doing it!!

  • wow you guys are really good!

my theatre group are thinking about doing this play for our a.s piece and watching this was really inspiring =D

  • @SillyLilttleGothGirl thank you very much :) i would totally recommend doing this script, it was amazing to work with and even better to perform! there is soo much freedom to just do whatever you want and im really glad you like our finished product! have you seen all 4 parts? we had to edit the script to shorten the piece, so not every line is in it, but we start with the start of the script and we end with almost the end of the script so we do get the whole story in!!

  • @tomcox15 =) we're set on this play now and have just started to learn our line =) yeah i watched it all through and was really impressed with it! we've got to edit the script down too which is always trickey but we're thinking of doing the middle section so all the main actoin is in it =)

  • @SillyLilttleGothGirl hope all is going well 2 weeks into things! you're right the main action is mostly all in the middle section, certainly the best bits to perform are in the middle!! lol what kind of style are you going for?

see all
