R boone's voice as smaug is soooo sexy in this movie--his voice was perfect for smaug--boone's a badasss in animation as well as all his other work- on film-and john huston and orson bean are great; too!

My favorite lines from this movie are Bilbo's "I'm aquiver with anticipation" and Smaug's mocking "You don't know 'bout that...?"

Both are so iconic, and I use them in my daily life without even recognizing them as references anymore.

this smaug looks like a cat or something, totally ghastly. i really hope they make it more like john howe's illustration in the upcoming films, dec 2011 and dec 2012.

"The Hobbit" actually debuted in 1977.

Also jsut have to say I LOVE what Richard Boone and Brother Theodore (Gollum) did with their characters). Don't get me wrong I love Andy Serkis's portrayal, but I felt the Theodore one had a more menacing feel to it. It's like Andy was was perfect as the pitiful Smeagol side and Theodore represented all the evil in his mind and in The Hobbit his evil is shown more as well as more mystery. The rest of the voice actors do well, but those two are the highlights voicewise and characterwise.

Why exactly does the dvd version remove some of the sound effects? I have the Hobbit on VHS but given that technology has been rapidly improving I felt that in a few years VHS may go completely out of style and I want to have kids someday and show them this so they can appreciate this just as much as Jackson's movies so I bought the dvd as well (is Return of the King on dvd too cause I haven't seen it). But why did they remove his roar and the spiders death cries? It kinda lowers the effect.
