BULBOUS BOUFFANT - The Vestibules - rotoscope animation

3 guys are waiting for the bus.

I made this video as my independent study in 2006 at the University of Iowa. It took about 300 hours, if I remember correctly. It's made with the rotoscope animation process which is where you take live action footage and essentially trace it to create a new effect.

This vid always delivers great joy! Little side note (probably repeating myself): I love how the first guy is clearly a Muppet (or a very off-kilter, oddly voiced, dressed, and made-up person, anyhow), and the second guy looks "normal" (or cartoon-normal, at least), but after he has given in to the fun and the 3rd guy arrives, HE looks so normal (and full size) that fellow #2 is revealed as the puppet he is.

As so many others have said, I LOVE this video! Thanks for making (and posting) it!

I've wanted to try this, but instead of real people or hand puppets, I've wanted to use stop motion puppets. any advice?

you want to animate it with stop-motion (which i fucking LOVE!) and THEN rotoscope it or just animation with stop-motion. If you just wanted to animate it with stop-motion, I say go for it! I'm assuming you already have some experience with it and know that it is a very time consuming process and requires a lot of patience. I love it and I've done a bit of it in the past. If you check out the credits you'll notice that it says the audio was created by The Vestibules and I don't hide that fact.  If you search "Bulbous Bouffant" in YouTube, you'll find a TON of other people who have used this very same audio. Actually, you probably see some of those in the bar on the left. In addition, I actually contacted The Vestibules and got official permission from them to create the video in the first place.

Thanks! Yeah, I actually used real puppets for the 2 main guys and then rotoscoped them by hand in photoshop. Same with the third guy but that one is me. I'm not a puppet. Yet.
