It's NOT for King or Country, but for King AND Country. Supporting one's King and Sovereign lord does not preclude love of country; indeed, loyalty to the King and patriotism for one's country are complementary and two sides of one coin as the King is the embodiment of the country and state. The Parliamentary rebels may have won the English Civil War but the Monarchy, troops, is still here. Charles I was a great man and he died the glorious death of a martyr.

On the one hand, Charles I was an arrogant asshole who thought it was his way, or the highway all the time. On the other hand Parliament was paranoid that because Charles' wife was Catholic...that meant there were "Papist plots" around every corner. Parliament feared a complete Catholic takeover of England and Charles feared Parliament would burn his wife at the stake. Kind hard to pick a good guy, ain't it?
