I started shagging at the OD Pavilion at age 14! We or I was instructed not to move the top part of my body--very mood was the key to top notch dancing. We danced by Earl Bostic and would sometime 1/2 time to the faster songs. The folks on the dance floors now look unhappy and like zombies(for the most part) , thinking about the next step!

Mary has obviously never been to Fat Harold's or Ducks' on a Friday or Saturday night. Dancers at this level don't need to look at their feet. Most of the steps the guy is doing can be done with any of the better female dancers at Fat Harold's or Ducks. There are some"mirror pattern" steps that require a practiced partner, but most of this stuff you can see all the time, albeit at a less skilled level. Shag is a smooth dance done to R&B or Beach music. It is the state dance of SC.
